The IRS’ 2019 HSA limits

The Internal Revenue Service has released the 2019 cost-of-living-adjusted HSA limits.

HSA contribution limits — along with high-deductible health plan (HDHP) deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums — will be increased from 2018:

  • The annual HSA contribution limit for employee-only coverage increases by $50 to $3,500  and increases $100 to $7,000 for family coverage.

  • The minimum deductible for employee-only HDHP stays at $1,350 ($2,700 for family coverage)

  • The limit on maximum out-of-pocket expenses (including deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance — but not premiums) for employee-only coverage increases by $100 to $6,750 and increases $200 to $13,500 for family coverage.

  • The catch-up contribution limit (for individuals who are 55 or older) remains $1,000. Note - couples who are both 55 or over may contribute $1,000 each but unlike the regular contribution, the couple cannot combine them so each person must have his or her own HSA account for the catch-up portion (the regular contribution can still be combined).

The penalty on taxable, non-medical distributions remains at 20%.
